Project Timeline

The project timeline shown below is for planning purposes only and is not official NSF guidance.

The site selection and logistics timeline mean that drilling is expected to begin no sooner than the 2025/26 field season.

Key dates:

  • January 2024: Field work logistics concept outlines could be considered (see https://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2023/nsf23509/nsf23509.htm#prep)
  • June 2024: Proposals involving limited-scope field work, potentially during the 2025/2026 set-up season.
  • 2025: Proposals for analysis of the core.
  • 2025/26 field season: First possible ice-core drilling.
  • June 2026: First possible ice-sampling season at the NSF Ice Core Facility.
  • 2026/27 and 2027/28 field seasons: Drilling continues.
  • 2028/29 field season: Finish ice-core drilling.
  • 2029/30 field season: Potential replicate and bedrock coring, and borehole logging (this work is not currently proposed or funded).
